2021/22 Match Day 2 – PearceyPlays #FM19 Journeyman Part 154 – OS4 C2 S3 – Berwick Rangers – Dumbarton (H) – 3rd August 2021

Today we play “The Sons of the Rock” for the first time this save, after a calamitous opening defeat by Morton.

The games come thick and fast early on – Morton was 31st July, Dumbarton 3rd August, Stenny on the 7th, Dundee in the IRN_BRU/Tunnocks on the 11th, so there will be plenty of rotation going on.

We’ve made 17 more season ticket sales this season(!) – up to 168 🙂

NEW SIGNING

One RB Munro leaves on loan, and we sign another 🙂

Eddie Munro (19, 5ft 10in) arrives on a free after being released by Kilmarnock. Decent Mentals for his age he will serve as cover with Martin McStay for Aaron Dunsmore.

Our Ressies lost 1-0 to Dumbarton Res, mainly our U18’s representing us in that game.

And so we arrive at game day. Our scouts don’t rate Dumbarton and their 16-man first team squad, and the bookies have us as favourites. We need the boys to gel though after a Cohesion-breaking off-season, and that’s only going to happen with game-time.

A good few changes with games coming thick and fast. Kyle Allison back in goal after Sinclair’s baptism of fire. Big Rod in for Neill, McIntosh for Leitch in the battle for the BWM spot. George Mitchell is waiting in the wings if Sean has a slow start to the season. Dumbarton go with a 4-4-1-1 – expecting a tough time breaking them down today.

HT Berwick 1 (Mackie 21) Dumbarton 2 (Jefferies 19, McCord 25)

The first game back at the heady heights of League One since 2007/08 today, hoping for a bumper crowd on this lovely summer’s evening. Plenty of space for the boys early on, but aftre just 103 seconds Dumbarton get a Penalty – a push on Handling by Mackie…… Can Allison be a hero?….. Yes, Forbes driving the ball straight down the middle, Allison palming it away… Sean should have scored in the 9th minute, harrying the defenders into a mistake, but shot straight at the Keeper whilst one-on-one. It’s a bit of a struggle, and Dumbarton took the lead in the 19th minute, a header from Jefferies from a corner. Missing big Harry Nicolson!! The lead only lasted for 2 minutes though – Sean Mackie with a lovely direct Free Kick. 1-1. Moving back to a 4-1-2-3, McIntosh withdrawing, Davidson back to Centre Mid. It was 2-1 Dumbarton in the 25th, a long ball by Forbes spectacularly volleyed home by McCord. I’m not happy defensively at the moment, we feel very weak. 2-1 Dumbarton at half time.

FT Berwick 1 (Mackie 21) Dumbarton 3 (Jefferies 19, McCord 25, Handling 62) Att 615 (94 Away)

Key Highlights

Wingers off at half time, going with the diamond. Turner in as DM, Davidson back up to AM. Mitchell on to pair with Sean up top. It was 3-1 in the 61st, a well controlled cross and shot from Handling. This is pretty poor. Leitch on for McIntosh. All of the sudden we’re just not very good. And Leitch gets himself sent off in the 85th for a second yellow… 3-1 it finished. That was really really poor.

We’ll do well to stay up if we keep playing like this… At least another club is doing as badly as we are…

Next up we are away to Stenhousemuir. See you then.
