PearceyPlays #FM19 Journeyman Part 130 – OS3 C2 S2 P28 – Berwick Rangers – League 2 Match Day 18 – Cowdenbeath (H) 19th December 2020 15:00

The Blue Brazil

I’m Back!!! Piriformis Syndrome/Sciatica has bested me for 2 weeks, but I’m finally able to sit down in a chair without crying!!

Even though we are just coming up to halfway through the season today’s game v Cowdenbeath could in-part decide where the League 2 title is going this season. With 3 points between us and 7 between Cowdenbeath & Stenny in 3rd we are both slowly pulling away from the pack, and with just the 1 automatic promotion spot up for grabs its vital that we at least don’t lose today (Cowdenbeath beat us 2-1 in September with an 89th minute goal in a game we at least deserved a point from).

Before then the usual few bits.

Our U18’s drew 1-1 with Bonnyrigg Rose Res – Ross Meechan with the goal. Our Res lost 2-1 to Spartans Res – Jordan Orru with the goal.

Lewis Barr & Seany-boy get into the team of the week for League 2 – Cowdenbeath with 5 players in there…

To the match. Our Scout reports have Cowdenbeath as good as us, if unremarkable; their best two players being 18/19 yo loanees, both in the Media Dream Eleven along with our loanee Nicolson.

Before we start the game I’m aware that my tenses wander during the match write-ups. From this point in all blogs, present and future I will stay in the present tense as I’m writing these as the game plays out. I will do this in Italics just so this is clear.

Barr/Cornelius Turner Overdrive in the middle of the park is working a treat. Slaven is keeping McGrath out, everybody else is a shoo-in. Cowdenbeath are playing a 4-1-3-2 – Dunbar the only man in Central Midfield so I hope for an overload there. Dangerman Allan up top though. Lets score (at least) one more goal than them 🙂

HT Berwick 1 (Slaven 15) Cowdenbeath 0

First Half Comprehensive Highlights v Cowdenbeath

Its a drizzly 4C today – our last game before Christmas 2020. An Ok start, pretty level, no real pressing from the Blue Brazil. And this led to the first goal, Balde unchallenged, a pass to Slaven who fires home bottom corner from 20 yards. 15 mins, 1-0 Berwick. Cowdenbeath are defending very deep. Nearly 2-0 in the 19th – a Balde header well gathered. 21st Minute – Cornelius gets a Groin Strain – staying on for now as the highlights come thick and fast as his condition goes back above 80%. Maybe a half-time sub. Cowdenbeath are looking more dangerous but we were tight – HT 1-0. Anxiety creeping in a bit.

The stats show how tight the game is. We didn’t take our clear-cut chance, which was McLaughlin at the back post. It feels like both teams are waiting for each other to push-on, and its leaving a vacuum in the middle of the park – However I’m looking at this as “If it aint broke…” and as such I’m just going to bring Slaven a bit deeper. Gardiner on for Cornelius, a just in case sub with Dean’s poorly groin…

FT Berwick 2 (Slaven 15, 79) Cowdenbeath 0 Att 691 (108 Away)

Second Half Comprehensive Highlights v Cowdenbeath

Cowdenbeath had the majority of the ball early on, but were offside so many times. A solid back 2 patrolling the line. Allison pulled off a worldie on 70 minutes to keep it 1-1 – Healy on for McLaughlin. A few tweaks, in a vain attempt to hold on in an increasingly frantic game and almost immediately a goal. Its that boy Slaven again – Sub Healy running a way with the ball before slotting him in – a lovely finish from 15 yards-or-so. 2-0, 80th minute. Sutherland on for Balde for our last change. Shut. Up. Shop, in the pouring Northumbrian rain. I always find keep-ball works well in theseinstances. 2-0 it finished, absolutely delighted with the lads!

The stats tell a good story – no chances conceded to Cowdenbeath, 50-50 possesion, Cowdenbeath only having 2 shots on target to our 6. This formation is working really well with Turner at DM.

6 points clear at the half-way point of the season, and 11 points back to 3rd with Stenny dropping points v Stirling, who we face next.Everybody else are taking points off of each other which is ideal. % League Wins in a row now!! Slaven with a brace puts him top of the League 2 scoring charts now with 14 in 16 (10 starts). Solid.

Dean Cornelius – Out for 5-6 Days with the Pulled Groin. No Problem.

Next up is our last game of 2020 – Stirling at Home. Lets make it 4 wins from 4 in December. See you then.
