Today we make the 85 mile trip (Just round the corner for us) to Fife to face Cowdenbeath in a top-of-the-table clash, our last game of September and the last game in the first round of matches. Its going to be a tough game.
The Scottish Cup 2nd Round draw has been made – we are away to Lowland League side Gretna in mid-October after they dispatched Fraserburgh of the Highland League 5-1. The Board wants us to get to the 4th Round so we will need to be careful with a potentially tricky tie.
Our U18’s beat Gala Fairydean U18’s 4-0 – 16yo Striker Alex Gourlay, Martin McNiff, Hamish Morrison with a penalty and an OG the scorers.
Our Ressies beat Dumbarton Res 3-0 – Ross Meechan, 18yo AMC Ross Gilmour & 17yo DC Simon Boyd with the goals.
Four league games at the weekend – Cowdenbeath slipping up with a 1-1 at Stranraer, Brechin losing 1-0 to Peterhead(!). It leaves us 1 point in front with a game in hand, with the potential to make that 4 points over Cowdenbeath still with the game in hand come 9:30pm on Tuesday…..
Our U18 have also played again, drawing 2-2 with Clyde U18, Daryl Healy & Cameron McGinn with the goals.
So to Cowdenbeath – Currently 2nd, Season preview of 5th, solid squad with their best two players loanees. They’ve played a 4-1-3-2 DM all season – 1 DM ,1 CM and 2 wingers, so playing wide.
We go back to the tried & tested Control Possession tactic. McNiff gets a start at left WB, Dunsmore at right WB, Allan up top with McGrath, everything else much of a muchness. Looking for a solid performance – again a draw isn’t a bad result today.
HT Cowdenbeath 0 Berwick 1 (McGrath 22)
A slow enough start, both teams with chances from set pieces. Breakthrough! 22nd minute, a missed header allowed Allan in on goal, and unselfishly he squared it to McGrath who hammered home from close range. 1-0 Berwick. A couple of time through balls have nearly cost us, so my defensive line is now at standard. There were a couple more chances before the end of the half – and it looks like Allan will need to come off with a pulled groin – but the half finished 1-0. A very tight game.
FT Cowdenbeath 2 (Allen 49, Dunbar 89) Berwick 1 (McGrath 22) Att 557 (135 Away)
So Allan is off – Slaven in, going to try playing them both as Advanced Forwards, as I don’t think TM is working very well. McNiff off for Watt – He was error prone and on a 6.3. Cowdenbeath started strongly with a string of corners, and Allen scored after getting free in the middle – 1-1 in the 49th minute. Passes suddenly going astray now, a real nervous feel to the play. McLaughlin on for Sutherland for the last 15. Then out of nowhere 2-1 Cowdenbeath, 89th minute, an absolute screamer from 30 yards from Dunbar. We should have been safe but that’s what happens if you don’t put your chances away. A 2-1 loss. We really need to turn this around.
So we’re 2nd after the first round of games, but with a game in hand v Stirling still to play. Stenny dropped points v Stirling as well, so it all looks very tight indeed.
Quick update on our first injury in ages – Lewis Allan out for 5-6 days with a pulled groin, so not too bad.
Next up will be the stats from a mediocre September plus a home game at Shielfield Park for the first time in 5 weeks when we play Annan, who come to us on the back of a 5-3 win. See you then.
